We are witnessing the latest iteration of a tired, dark performance. In the 1830s, Thomas "Daddy" Rice—the so-called "Father of Minstrelsy"—popularized a stage persona that relied on mockery, exaggerated buffoonery, and a calculated distortion of reality to entertain audiences at the expense of others. Today, we see that same spirit of performative deception in the rhetoric of Mr. Trump. It is a political theater built on the same foundations of distraction, distortion, and denial.
As a voice for the Fifth Estate—the independent journalists, organizers, and truth-seekers operating outside traditional media gates—we are here to pull back the curtain on this act. The script, however, is starting to wear thin.
The Broadcast Tantrum:
In his recent performance, Trump demanded that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revoke the broadcast licenses of NBC and ABC. He accused these networks of being complicit in a "plot" simply because they refused to air his latest speech.
It is a familiar rhythm: when the audience doesn't cheer for the lead performer, he demands the theater be shut down. He has previously weaponized the FCC to probe networks that dare to challenge his narrative, proving that for him, the "truth" is merely a set piece to be rearranged.
The Foreign Bogeyman:
During the same spectacle, Trump conjured the specter of China, accusing the country of "harvesting 220 million" voter records—a claim met with a swift and firm denial from the Chinese Embassy. It is a classic move from the old minstrel repertoire: pointing the finger at an external force to distract from the fragility of one's own act. The irony is as thick as the greasepaint used in those old, shameful productions—the spectacle relies on the audience’s willingness to prefer a convenient, manufactured fiction over the reality of their own institutions.
Betting on the Buffoonery:
Perhaps the most telling scene in this tragicomedy is the revelation that a White House teleprompter operator was placed on leave for betting on the very speeches they were helping to project. Placing wagers on the predictability of one’s own performance—and netting $90,000 in the process—perfectly captures the cynicism of this era. It wasn't just a political rally; it was a marketplace for those who knew exactly how shallow the performance had become.
From the desk of Heartbeat Movement Inc., we see this show for what it is. But we must go further than mere observation. Here in Ohio, we see these national tactics mirrored in the local efforts to suppress accountability and erode the constitutional protections of our citizens. We cannot afford to be passive observers of this political theater. It is time for Ohioans to demand transparency and hold our leadership to the constitutional standards they swore to uphold.
The Fifth Estate is more than an audience; it is a movement. Join us in demanding the accountability our state and our nation deserve.
